Autumn—and changing up your beauty look, including fall hair colors—tends to sneak up on us. Just as we’re enjoying being expensive brunette or any other summer shade we’ve decided to wear for the warmer months, it’s all of a sudden time to start thinking about those fall hair colors.
Luckily this fall season doesn’t call for too much of a drastic transition. Blonde shades and reds will be dominant. You can also expect many of the spring and summer colors we’ve grown to love, such as honey blonde, Chantilly blonde, and cowboy copper, to continue trending as the months get colder. We’re always in favor for anything low-maintenance that gives us easy and cool vibes, especially for our fall hair color trends.
As always, the best hair color is the one you love. So if you’re looking for a refresh and some new hair color ideas for the new season, you’ve come to the right place. Below are the eight fall hair colors that should be on your radar, straight from the experts. Scroll down to find your perfect match.
Champagne Blonde
Expect to see many blonde shades, from platinum blonde to blonde highlights, this fall season. One of celebrity colorist Jenna Perry’s favorite shades is this champagne color, which she describes as a beige blonde. It’s soft, ultra-luxe, and works great on every skin tone. Something like Margot Robbie’s Barbie blonde strikes the perfect balance of depth and cool.
Smokey Brunette
Deep shades such as dark chocolate brown and espresso brown for fall are expected, but that doesn’t make them any less special. Perry says a smokey brunette, which is a deep brown shade with depth and dimension, is the perfect color to transition into cozier weather.

Perry says to think of apricot blonde as an updated version of the classic strawberry blonde shade. It’s a mix of golden blonde and copper hair to give it a bit more edge. Evan Rachel Wood’s long wavy apricot blonde is bright with that red tint to really elevate the look.
Cowboy Copper
Cowboy copper’s reign on our hair mood boards won’t be over anytime soon. Perry predicts that everyone will be turning to this shade of red during the colder months. This shade, which is described as a blend of brunette and bronze to give hair a rust-like effect, has a more subtle look compared to its other red counterparts. But it’s in its simplicity where it makes a huge statement for fall.

An ode to the ’90s and pre-Y2K era, these honey and caramel highlights have golden and warm warm tones with depth at the base color.” Think Jessica Alba [or] Jennifer Lopez circa ’90s,” says Olivia Casanova, colorist and co-owner of IGK salon.
They can also work as lowlights or a natural-looking balayage to brighten up your hair. Casanova’s best tip to keep color looking bright and fresh at home is using the Davines Alchemic System line. The shampoos and conditioners, she says, contain pure pigment to maintain your color’s vibrancy. As an added bonus, they have products to cover most shades.
Crimson Red
Deep and jewel-toned, Perry says that a striking crimson red makes for a perfect fall shade. To keep this color—or any shade—vibrant, she recommends using the Olaplex Hair Repair System, which includes fan favorites No. 0 Bond Building Treatment and No. 7 Bonding Oil. “I always recommend the Olaplex range to keep hair strong and healthy,” she says. “Their products help repair hair bonds and protect hair integrity.”

Both Perry and Casanova see the viral Scandinavian hairline, which has been declared the It hair shade this summer, going strong well into the colder months. For Casanova, she even sees it going beyond the hairline and covering all of your hair. “[It] has a beige-y toned baby lights to the root throughout the head, with a brighter hairline blending into even brighter ends,” she says.
Chantilly Blonde
“[It’s] a light, warm blonde with subtle, creamy undertones,” says Redken ambassador Sean Godard. “[It] aims to give a natural, sun-kissed look, often used to brighten and soften the overall appearance of hair.” Godard recommends using color-safe shampoos, like the Redken Acidic Color Gloss Shampoo. Another pro tip: rinse with cool water. It will help excess color from fading too fast.
